Beach Art/Driftwood & Sand

Driftwood & Sand is a summer celebration of art on the Hokitika beach New Zealand. Held annually in late January, participants are invited to express themselves using any materials found on the beach.

Prizes are awarded in five different categories judged by a guest artist, and by public vote.

I started Driftwood & Sand as a local artist, who saw the driftwood-strewn beach as a creative opportunity, offering the raw materials and the inspiration for a community sculpture competition with a difference. The event has become a regular feature of the West Coast arts calendar and is now run by a committee and I attend each year mainly to make a signature sculpture and offer a little guidence.
